The 82nd Academy Awards, or more commonly referred to as the 2010 Oscars, an event that honors the biggest and brightest names from Hollywood, bestowed upon six prestigious titles to the extremely mind blowing, Hollywood blockbuster, The Hurt Locker. The movie is set in the year 2004, around a U.S Army bomb defusing team, that is called upon to various locations in Iraq to defuse roadside IEDs (improvised explosive devices).
Amid all the fanfare and the incredible success story of The Hurt Locker, it has been observed that, the movie in fact fiddled with some vital trivia from the realms of gaming and the Internet. Many argue that, as the movie is a pure work of fiction, such errors can be overlooked, but for most of the tech savvy users and critics, the mention of certain aspects of these categories is just too much to bear.
For instance, before Specialist Owen Eldridge played by Brian Geraghty is approached by the unit’s psychiatrist, he is seen playing on a Xbox 360, a gaming console that wasn’t launched till the year 2005 and on top of that, he is playing Gears of War, a gaming title not published till the year 2006. Now, unless the soldiers in the year 2004 had perfected some ways of time travel, then such an error would be very hard to ignore. A second blooper came in the form of a dialog, when during an bomb defusing mission at a U.N building, Geraghty observes a man filming the mission and states that, the video might be uploaded to YouTube. As the film was set in the year 2004 and YouTube wasn’t launched until the year 2005, then, this also makes for an error that is pretty hard to just let go as a fictional work.
